Learning to play any instrument has many health benefits - improving memory, cognitive skills and coordination. It's a great form of therapy, and can relieve stress too. Gain an appreciation for music, and develop a skill.
My private teaching practice has been running for over fifteen years. My personal tuition has been received from Trevor Tompkins (Royal Academy) and Colin Woolway (Drumsense programme founder). Most recently I have studied with Allan Cox (touring professional and former Jim Blackley student), Craig Blundell and Pete Riley.
My professional teaching experience is founded on participation in the Drumsense programme for six years. This is used as basis for lessons and study course. The programme develops an understanding of different styles of music, and links written notation with the experience of playing music. This ensures that rhythm is linked to melody, and is seen as part of the whole style rather than being isolated. The Drumsense programme provides connection to the Rockschool examination system, and is the basis of the Trinity College of Music drum kit syllabus.
CAVMS employed me as a peripatetic tutor for six years traveling to schools throughout South Wales area to provide drum tuition - the areas covered included rhythm/drum set workshops, Rockschool gradings, GCSE assessments, assistance/coaching of school orchestras and concert bands. I have also spent two years as lecturer on various HND music courses at Coleg Glan Hafren Cardiff. The courses which I have taught included Live Performance Workshop, Understanding Music, History of Popular Music and Music in Context. I also acted as Foundation Group Tutor responsible for pastoral care of fifteen students during their first year at College. My private practice has continued to expand and grow during this time utilizing the skills which I have acquired. In recognition of these skills and achievements I have become part of the Roland Teaching Program as an official Ambassador for the most widely used electronic drums on the planet.
